Neither figure is fully usable in practice, since pallet footprints rarely tessellate perfectly against a container's interior walls, plan for real utilization somewhat below the nominal capacity shown above.
Ocean freight itself splits into two very different pricing models worth distinguishing before you request a quote. A full container load (FCL) is priced as a flat rate for the whole box regardless of how much of its capacity you actually use, which makes the container-capacity figures above directly relevant to deciding whether a shipment justifies its own container or should ship as less-than-container-load (LCL) instead. LCL shipments are consolidated with other shippers' cargo and priced per CBM or per metric ton (whichever is greater, the same dimensional-weight logic covered above), which is where an accurate volume calculation earns back its cost fastest, overestimating a small LCL shipment's CBM by even a little inflates the quote proportionally, since there's no flat container rate to absorb the difference.
Worked Example: A Standard Pallet
A pallet load 48 in × 40 in × 60 in:
48 × 40 × 60 = 115,200 in³ → 115,200 ÷ 1,728 = 66.67 ft³
66.67 ft³ × 0.0283168 = 1.89 CBM

Measuring Irregular or Oversized Freight
Not every shipment is a clean box. For irregularly shaped freight, a piece of machinery, furniture with an odd profile, anything that doesn't fill a rectangular footprint, carriers still bill against the smallest rectangular box that would fully contain the item, not its actual occupied volume. Measure the maximum length, width and height the object reaches in each direction, even if most of that box is empty space around the actual item, and use those outer measurements in this calculator. This is deliberately conservative from a shipper's perspective, but it's how dimensional weight is actually assessed, so calculating it any other way just means a mismatch with the carrier's own measurement when the shipment is inspected.
Oversized or overweight freight often triggers additional handling fees independent of the standard dimensional-weight calculation, thresholds vary by carrier, but a single piece exceeding around 150 lb or 96 inches in any one dimension commonly crosses into special-handling territory. Packaging Volume vs. Product Volume
The volume that matters for a freight quote is the outer shipping package's footprint, not the product inside it, a small, dense item shipped in an oversized box gets billed on the box's dimensions regardless of how little space the actual product occupies.
